Adults over the age of 65 buy 30% of all prescription drugs and 40% of all over-the-counter drugs.  However, many drug companies are still in the process of adopting measures to ensure drugs are appropriate for the elderly (such as including elderly subjects in drug studies). Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to understand the caregiver’s role in medication management for assisted living residents, define the importance of awareness, observation, and reporting in medication management, identify the guidelines for monitoring medication management and describe the purpose and possible side effects of the most common medications.
