What to Expect on the Webinar (DAY 1 & DAY 2):

Day 1: AM Session – The Caring Culture (1 hr Approved) Operating in CA: Labor Law (2 hrs Approved) OHSA Review: Residential Care (2 hrs Approved)
Day 1: PM Session – Fall Reduction (1 hr  Approved) Train the Trainer (2 hrs Approved) Infection Control (2 hrs Approved)

This course has been designed to provide 4 hours on laws and regulations. The morning session will start with a pursuit of a caring culture and why our industry is so special.  We then move into an update on CA’s everchanging labor law and OSHA landscape. If we need to stay updated on labor law, then so do you. The average US company has a 10.5% chance of being sued by an employee, with the average cost of defense and settlement being $160,000 per lawsuit. California employers have a 46% higher chance of litigation above that rate. The afternoon session will focus on reducing the risk of falls. We then move into understanding how to properly train staff and techniques for retention—finishing with two hours on infection control, which will be a focus of licensing inspection for the foreseeable future.

Day 2: AM Session – LGBTQ Update (1 hr LGBT Approved)
Dementia and the Brain (4 hrs Dementia Approved)
Day 2: PM Session – Beyond Dementia (5 hrs Dementia Approved)

This course has been designed to provide 1 hour on LGBT and 9 hours on dementia. The morning session will focus on 1 hour of instruction in cultural competency and sensitivity in issues relating to the underserved aging lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. We will then move into effective care strategies for different behaviors, including dementia-related behaviors.  The afternoon session will focus on the care and management of dementia in residential care.

What to Expect on the Webinar (DAY 3 & DAY 4):

Day 3: AM Session: Bipolar (1 hr) Schizophrenia (1 hr) Elder and Adult Abuse (2 hrs) Recognizing Signs and Symptoms of Dementia (1 hrs)
Day 3: PM Session: Hospice (1 hr) Resident/Client Engagement (2 hrs) Service Plan and Appraisal Process (2 hrs)

The morning session will focus on 1 hour of understanding bipolar as well as different diagnoses and treatment. Next up is Schizophrenia, which may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning and can be disabling. Sound familiar? We then focus on elder and adult abuse. Ending with exploring the many causes of dementia, describing the characteristics of onset, and finishing with practical ways caregivers can assist those who are beginning their journey with dementia. The afternoon session will focus on caring for terminally ill residents/clients and the benefits of hospice. We will then move to engagement and our responsibilities as care providers to encourage residents/clients to maintain and develop their fullest potential for independent living through participation in planned activities. We end with service plans and the appraisal process, which will focus on our responsibility to identify resident/client needs. Discuss the importance of developing a strong service plan with the appropriate decision-makers in the process.

Day 4: AM Session: Staying Informed (1 hr) – Human Resources (2 hrs) – Caregiver Burnout (2 hrs)
Day 4: PM Session: Restricted and Prohibited Conditions (3 hrs) – Managing Challenging Behaviors (2 hrs)

The morning session will focus on 1 hour on how to accurately stay informed on the ever-changing environment. We then move to understanding human resources, emphasizing staff performance management and worker’s compensation guidelines and best practices.  We end the morning session discussing caregiver burnout, which we should be aware of now more than ever. The afternoon session will focus on a topic providers should always have on their minds, an accurate understanding of restricted and prohibited conditions.  A residential care setting can provide or arrange for a broad array of care and services. However, we do have limits on the types of health conditions that are allowed and who will provide the care.  We end with managing behavioral challenges, which is typically a daily occurrence in residential care. Learn about the emotional characteristics and physical and emotional impairments and develop techniques useful in dealing with difficult situations.
